The Iconic Windmills

Our adventure began with a stroll along the iconic windmills that line the waterways of Kinderdijk. These 19 windmills, built in the 18th century, were essential for managing the water levels in the area, showcasing the ingenuity of Dutch engineering. As we walked along the paths, we marveled at their striking silhouettes against the backdrop of a bright blue sky. It felt as if we had stepped back in time, surrounded by the gentle sounds of nature and the whirring of the windmill sails.

One of our favorite windmills was Mill No. 2, known as the Woudse Mol, which is open to visitors. We climbed the narrow stairs and entered the living quarters, where we learned about the lives of the millers and their families. The mill is open from April to October, from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and tickets are €5 per person. The experience of being inside a functioning windmill was truly unforgettable!

The Kinderdijk Visitor Center

After exploring the windmills, we headed to the Kinderdijk Visitor Center, where we found a wealth of information about the history and significance of the area. The center features interactive exhibits, informative displays, and a cozy café where we could enjoy a snack while soaking in the view of the windmills from the terrace. The friendly staff provided us with helpful tips for our visit and shared fascinating stories about the construction of the windmills and the challenges faced by the local community over the years.

The Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and admission is free, making it an excellent starting point for anyone visiting Kinderdijk. We highly recommend stopping by to gather information, especially if you’re planning to explore on foot or by bike.
