Working remotely from a sunny Mediterranean destination is becoming an increasingly appealing lifestyle choice. A new international comparison has identified Cyprus as the most attractive option among seven popular destinations for British digital nomads planning a long-term move abroad.

The island received an overall score of 8.17 out of 10, outperforming Malta, Portugal, Spain, Dubai, Thailand and Bali. The findings highlight Cyprus's accessibility, widespread use of English and opportunities for establishing a permanent home.

Why Cyprus Leads The Ranking

The September 2026 study, conducted by property developer Domenica Group, compared destinations using six equally weighted criteria.

These included travel time from Britain, visa requirements, taxation, living expenses, ease of relocation and long-term residency opportunities.

Cyprus performed particularly well for accessibility. Direct flights from London take approximately four and a half hours, making regular visits home relatively convenient.

English is widely spoken, especially in tourism, business and international communities.

The island also offers opportunities for property ownership and long-term residency, although eligibility depends on nationality and personal circumstances.

How Much Does Living In Cyprus Cost?

Despite its advantages, living expenses were Cyprus's weakest category in the comparison.

Estimated monthly costs for one person, including accommodation, range from approximately €1,750 to €1,950.

A family of four may require around €4,380 monthly, depending on housing and lifestyle choices.

Rent accounts for a significant proportion of these expenses.

A one-bedroom apartment outside a city centre typically costs approximately €680–€780 per month, while centrally located accommodation may range from €875 to €975.

Basic household utilities can add around €195 monthly, with internet access costing approximately €35.

These figures are indicative rather than fixed prices, and expenses vary considerably between destinations.

Where To Live And Work Remotely

Cyprus offers several appealing locations for remote workers.

Limassol provides a lively international environment, modern infrastructure and convenient coastal living, although accommodation can be expensive.

Paphos offers historic attractions, attractive beaches and a generally more relaxed atmosphere.

Larnaca combines seaside living with convenient airport access, making it particularly suitable for frequent travellers.

Nicosia, the capital, offers a different experience, with urban amenities and opportunities to explore the island's cultural heritage.

Choosing between these locations depends on budget, preferred lifestyle and professional requirements.

How Other Destinations Compare

Malta finished second with 8.0 points, followed by Portugal with 7.17 and Spain with 7.0.

Dubai received 6.33 points, while Thailand scored 5.0 and Bali finished with 4.0.

The comparison focused specifically on British remote workers rather than travellers of every nationality.

Visa arrangements, taxation and residency rights may therefore produce different results for applicants from other countries.

The ranking also examined only seven selected destinations, meaning it does not establish Cyprus as the world's best location for every digital nomad.

Why The Island Appeals Beyond Work

Cyprus offers approximately 640 kilometres of coastline, with sandy beaches, turquoise waters and opportunities for outdoor activities.

Hiking trails, mountain villages and cycling routes provide alternatives to working indoors.

Its Mediterranean climate also makes outdoor recreation possible during much of the year.

For remote workers considering relocation, however, practical considerations remain essential. Tax obligations, residence permits, healthcare access and accommodation availability should all be investigated before moving.

Cyprus's combination of accessible travel, established international communities and coastal scenery makes it an appealing option for those seeking a different balance between work and everyday life.
